Functional Reading Program at The Reading Connection

Functional Reading Program

Research shows that individuals with significant cognitive disabilities can learn to read if provided with systematic, intensive and ongoing instruction. Unfortunately, this group of individuals has often been denied reading instruction or reading instruction has been underemphasized. Learning to read will improve your student’s opportunities and life choices.

Our program at The Reading Connection focuses on the following methodologies to teach functional reading to cognitively disabled individuals of all ages:

  • Reading instruction in terms of:
    • Reading comprehension
    • Listening comprehension
    • Decoding of regular words
    • Sight word recognition of irregular words
    • Vocabulary
    • Fluency
    • Phonological Awareness
    • Written Expression
  • Academic application of reading: reading of books
  • Real life application of reading: reading of signs, menus, job applications etc.

Instructors in this program are master’s level reading specialists who also have experience and training in working with children, adolescents and adults with significant cognitive impairments.
