Reading Assessments, Interventions, Tutoring and Development provided by The Reading Connection

Reading Assessment and Intervention

All incoming reading clients receive a reading intake assessment that measures the following domains:

  • phonological awareness;
  • phonics (decoding of real and nonsense words);
  • spelling (encoding of real words);
  • sight word recognition;
  • reading rate;
  • reading accuracy;
  • reading comprehension;
  • writing;
  • reading emotions and attitude.

An Intake Assessment Report will be provided within two weeks of an assessment session. This report includes analysis of strengths and weaknesses as well as recommendations for a reading intervention plan.

All incoming clients are asked to bring any prior diagnostic testing, school report cards and work samples. Incoming clients are also asked to fill out the Parent Reading Connection Survey.

Reading Intervention

Reading Intervention sessions are 45 minute one-on-one sessions with a certified reading specialist. Reading intervention activities are tailored to the specific needs of each client and are based on the reading intake assessment. At-home assignments are given to compliment each reading intervention session. We utilize a variety of tools including the Orton-Gillingham based phonics instruction (sequential, direct, and specific with an overlearning component embedded in instruction) and hands-on multisensory instruction. All materials are provided.
